During World War II, Minooka played an important role as one of three American military sites located in central Illinois responsible for training Allied forces engaged in Operation Overlord; other sites were Camp Douglas (now Bloomington) and Camp Eisenhower (now Mount Prospect). After the war, many people left Minooka for jobs outside of town but there remain a few businesses including several restaurants and cafes that keep alive some of the community's traditions such as rodeo events or history buff talks about local places like Fort Wayne or Black Sands

Minooka, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,613 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was settled by German immigrants in 1875 and named for an early settler, Minnie Schmidt. The first post office in the community was established in 1878. The name "Minooka" was changed to "Montezuma" during World War II because of its strategic location on the Monon Railroad between Indianapolis and Chicago. In 1957, Montezuma Township merged with Minooka Township to form a new municipality. In 1966, Montezuma Township again merged with Minooka Township to form a new village called Montezuma Village. In 1990, the village and township were dissolved and their respective populations were combined into one township with name change to Minooka Township again effective January 1st 1991 when all municipalities within McLean County became consolidated into one government entity known as Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area under then newly created federal statute §1501(d)). As of the 2000 census there are 1,613 people living in MinOOKA IL (1/6th of Springfield's population). Of that 1/6th only 680 are actual residents of MINOOKA... most likely still working or commuting here everyday while others have left over time due to different types of beckoning offers from other larger towns nearby like ORLANDO or CHICAGO which had much more promise but fell short due mainly to zoning problems (housing prices changing rapidly)... MINOOKA has been home to many famous natives such as: George Harrison who lived here until he moved away in 1976; Jerry Lee Lewis who played his last concert at MINOOKA Stadium on MAY 21ST 1994; Bobby Vee who played his final show at MONTEZUMA High School Arena on OCTOBER 6TH 1985;and many more!
