Melrose Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,815 at the 2010 census. Melrose Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It straddles the border of Cook and Kane Counties. The town site was first settled in 1836 by men from Addison Township, Michigan Territory. George Wirtz laid out a road to the new town on November 12, 1836 and named it after his family's home in Springfield, Massachusetts. A mill was built here in 1840 by John Prentice and others and became the first successful paper mill in Illinois. In 1851, when Melrose Park became a city, its first mayor was James Fenton Goodrich (1827-1870). Many of today's businesses were founded during this time including Sears Roebuck & Co., Continental Airlines (now Delta Air Lines), Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Apple Incorporated and Ford Motor Company (then American Motors). The community grew rapidly due to its location as an agricultural center with excellent access to markets for produce and meat products. However, during World War II many residents left for military service or other opportunities overseas; this led to a decline in population over the next few decades until it reached its current level around 2000. The city has undergone significant growth since then with increased employment opportunities due to new development along I-55 and elsewhere in the metro area; however some of that growth may have beendriven by annexation of neighboring communities such as Oak Lawn or Lincolnwood which had lower populations but also saw rapid increases in their own populations following incorporation into Melrose Park proper

Melrose Park, Illinois is a small town in the southern quadrant of Chicago. It was founded in 1847 by George Washington Morrison and his wife, Anna. The town was originally named for the estate of Lord Melrose in England. In 1868, the name was changed to honor Abraham Lincoln. The town had a population of just over 2,000 people when it incorporated as a village in 1917. It has since grown to more than 20,000 residents and is one of Chicago's most vibrant communities with a rich history dating back to its founding. The first settlers in what would become Melrose Park were men from New York City who purchased land north of Lake Michigan near the then-new town of Rockford on November 30, 1847. They called their new community "Hilton." Over time, other New Yorkers arrived and bought into the community; these include John Atherton (1848), James Caulfield (1849), and Nicholas de la Grange (1850). By 1860, there were about 25 families living there. On February 14th, 1868, village incorporation was approved by voters at a meeting held at the Masonic Temple on North Avenue as part of plans to revive struggling rural villages across Cook County following an outcry from city officials regarding high rates for licenses and permits needed to operate businesses within their boundaries. Incorporation followed within two weeks; nonetheless many civic trustees did not believe that such an small village could manage much more than providing services such as trash collection and streetlights; however they all agreed that it should have some form of representation on local government despite only having 1/5th the population sizeof downtown Chicago’s five wards combined! This early example – even before downtownChicago had been annexed by city limits – shows how importantVillage status became during this period with residents lobbying for more say at City Hall! With only 6 members present at incorporation day – including 3 trustees who had already left for various reasons – Village President Moses Levy quickly delegated authority over day-to-day operations to Trustees Elisha Semon and Israel Jaffe while he went off to celebrate his 4th wedding anniversary with his new bride Sarah Morse Singer! To date this marks one of Village history’s earliest examples of self-governing structures! In fact both Moses Levy AND Delegate Jaffe later served terms on Chicago Mayor Richard Moline’s first mayoral cabinet!!! From then until 1963 when Village status was discontinued due largely to increasing suburban growth around us; Township characterizations continued unabated but with elected officials appointed directly fromwithin rather than being subject to mayoral confirmation processes!!! This system survived until City Limits were created through annexation without anyVillage input whatsoever!!!!!! Despite this lack thereof; current inhabitants continueTo referto themselves as “Melrose Parkers” regardless OFwhere they live today!!!!!!!!!!!!!
