This development led to more homes being built along North Avenue which then became known as 'the avenue of dreams'. Many famous names have been associated with Melrose Park such as Adlai Stevenson (Ulysses S Grant),aple Smith (founder of ArmouryGold), Winthrop Rockefeller (19th century governor of New York), Eleanor Roosevelt (First Lady of America) and Jay Leno ( comedian ). Today's community is home to many high-tech companies as well as several small businesses that support village life like art galleries, pubs and restaurants. Melrose Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,653 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago, after Chicago and Rushford. With a total area of , Melrose Park is one of the most populous cities in Illinois. The first European settlement in what would become Melrose Park was made by Jacob Weisenthal and his family on March 25, 1814 when they purchased land from the Peoria Indians. Weisenthal named his new community after himself, but it soon became known as "Milton". In 1827, an act of the General Assembly changed its name to "Melrose Park". The name change came about because of objections from residents of nearby Cicero who felt that their town had been given an undeserved nameadvantage because it lay near Ionia Hills which were then called "Ridgefield" and because Milton's namesake (a man who owned land there) had donated $5 for school construction in 1824. In 1829, Rev. Chauncey Billings organized a group of Methodists to begin worshiping at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church on Prospect Avenue and renamed their church "Church Of The Holy Cross" (later renamed Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Zion). A new Presbyterian church also began operations on Michigan Avenue within three years of the original Church Of The Holy Cross' incorporation; this building still stands today as part of the University Of Chicago campus. In 1830–31 Reverend John Nicholson started preaching at First Baptist Church on Dearborn Street while pastor John McNamara served at Second Baptist Church on South State Street due east across State Street from First Baptist where Reverend Nicholson officiated until he resigned to start his own congregation in 1833†††† When both churches burned down during heavy rainstorms in1837–38‡‡‡ Melrose Park experienced its first tornado outbreak which destroyed six homes including Mrs.(?) McNamara's home on Dearborn Street just south of Jackson Boulevard near Northwestern Memorial Hospital*.*.* By 1840*, when Emerson College opened up shop along Jackson Boulevard between Douglas Road and Parnell Place*.*., many people living northward now spoke English than Latin or Spanish so Melrose Park acquired its current name: "English Row". In 1865*, two brothers by the name of Seymour founded Seymour Manufacturing Company (now Xerox) here – making photocopiers and printers before computers arrived *.
