The Welles brothers were direct descendants of George Washington Welles who settled in what is now Quincy, Massachusetts in 1680. However, when it became apparent that General James Kasky would not be coming to Melrose Park to open an Arsenal there (he instead built one in Aurora), the citizens voted to rename the town “Belleville” on November 5th 1847. When Kasky died two years later, his heirs decided against successor James Pritzker and chose instead to name their new municipality after Driscoll and Company’s planters at Belleville on Long Island which they had just visited during their trip across America. Belleville quickly became a fashionable community for local elites because of its beautiful landscape and well-to-do residents. In 1853, Belleville merged with other towns in Cook County – including Melrose Park – under one board of directors system known as “the corporation commission” which led to increased efficiency and improved public services throughout Cook County. During World War 1, many businesses closed down due to prohibition but by 1919 most businesses had reopened thanks to war production credits which gave companies an opportunity to reopen without having to pay any taxes or contribute any capital costs back into the community they once ran like a business should have done! In 1923 President Warren Harding issued an Executive Order creating three committees: Race Relations; Civic Affairs; Housing and Urban Development (HUD) which would be responsible for allocating HUD monies based on need rather than race or class! This order marked the beginning of change within American society as this was formerly done through political patronage! This order also spawned what are now called housing programs such as FHA or Freddie Mac which would help people purchase homes regardless of income levels! Not only did this help spur economic growth but also helped create thousands more jobs since these purchases could then be used for further economic development not just for current homeowners but also developers who may have been interested in building new homes specifically for those living below poverty lines! Today much remains unchanged from those early days including Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s support for Mayor Bloomberg’s affordable housing initiative known asNYCHA which has helped millions become homeowners over the last decade despite being met with resistance from some politicians within City Hall who see it simply as government spending without any real impactful outcomes!!

The early residents were primarily farmers and their families, but as the canal grew more accessible, businesses and jobs began to grow in Melrose Park. Melrose (1811-1886) who donated land for what became Melrose Park Cemetery; and Rebecca Goldsmith (born 1837), who donated land for schoolrooms, churches, a post office, and other buildings in what is now known as West Side Village which still stands today!
