In 1871, Melrose Park was the site of a shooting match between two teams of riflemen. The first recorded gunfight in this location took place on November 15th, 1871 when five men were killed and eleven wounded in a battle between the town's militia and an unknown group of antagonists. In 1893, at least six people were shot dead by mistake at a shoot-out at the local saloon. On October 26th, 1896, police officers from neighboring towns responded to reports of shots being fired near High School in Melrose Park. Upon arrival, they discovered that four people had been fatally shot by accident while playing basketball on school property. On December 5th of that year, another shooting occurred when three men - all unarmed - were killed as they walked home from buying ice cream cones at a nearby stoplight. The last recorded gunbattle in Melrose Park occurred on May 16th, 1938 when two gunmen opened fire on nine people gathered around a car dealership after getting lost in the night. No one was injured but several cars were damaged or destroyed in the course of the altercation.
Melrose Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,613 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Chicago and one of its six wards. The city was founded on October 15, 1836 by General George Washington Kapp and his brother-in-law Major John Richardson as Yorkville Township. On December 12, 1836, it became part of the larger village of Melrose Park when all but one ward of Yorkville were annexed to that village. On January 1, 1847 (the date Melrose Park was organized), all of Cook County except for parts of Chicago were absorbed into Ulysses S. Grant's new country territory - what is now Illinois - and Melrose Park became part of that territory too. However, on January 1st only a small slice (northwest suburban Kane County) merged with Melrose Park while the rest continued to be governed by their respective villages'. This anomaly still exists as Kane County has since been reorganized into six wards which each have its own mayor and City Councilmember: north/central Ward 4 (Lakeview/Hollywood Beach), northwest Ward 2 ( Schaumburg/Niles Heights), northeast Ward 3 (Elmhurst/Lemont), southwestWard 5 (Oak Lawn/Wesleyan Hills), and southwest Ward 6 (Skokie). The first post office opened in 1838 in Yorkville; it closed in 1861 due to low demand. The first school was established in 1840 in Yorkville; it closed in 1865 due to low enrollment. In 1850s two churches were built: First Methodist Church located east of current day Lake Street between North Avenue and Michigan Avenue and Second Presbyterian Church located west of present day State Street between Prairie Avenue and Western Avenue. A freight depot served the town until 1862 when a branch railroad was built linking Chicago with Aurora via Ottawa Heights Station outside Aurora proper. A second freight depot served the town from 1863 until 1896 when an electric light company took over service providing illumination throughout town during night hours beginning on February 26th 1893 using equipment stored at the old Army Ammunition Plant on Wabash Ave adjacent to present day Lincoln Road near Southport Drive across from Loyola UniversityChicago Campus where much later Southport will also stand
