Melrose Park was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, U.S., located about 10 miles north of Chicago on the east bank of the La Salle River. It had a population of just over 2,000 people at the time of its incorporation in 1868. The first section of Melrose Park was donated to the town by John Davenport and his wife Anna Ladd; it contains what is today the John Davenport Elementary School. The original village site was on land that now includes parts of northwest suburban Chicago; most notably, Belmont Avenue ran through it. The name derives from a large grove of trees near where Melrose Park now stands. A post office operated in what is now Melrose Park from 1872 to 1888. To provide for public transportation, the village built two early streetcar lines: one ran along Milwaukee Road (now I-70) south to West Side Highway and then turned north via Roosevelt Road east to Cicero Avenue; and another ran along Washington Boulevard (now Kimball Avenue) north to Addison Street and then turned east via Lincoln Boulevard into downtown Chicago. In 1892, both these lines were merged into one line known as "The Loop" which continued until 1934 when it was replaced by buses following citywide regulations banning streetcars within a certain radius of City Hall. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited what is today Melrose Park and signed an ordinance establishing civic rights for blacks in Illinois townships such as this one; like much else during his presidencyrxxxxiii*, race played an important role in Mellrose Park's development thereafterxxxxiv*. The first black family to live here came from Stroudsburg Township, Pennsylvaniaxlv*—Emmett Till’s family bought a home on Belmont Avenue in 1875xlvi*. They lived there until their death six years later†—a reminder that relocation wasn't always easy or seamless for African Americans living in white society outside America's largest city at that time†—and helped lay the groundwork for later generations who would come here‡
In 1847, a group of businessmen from Melrose Park founded the Illinois Central Railroad. The railroad was built to transport goods and passengers between Chicago and St. Louis. The company grew quickly and by 1871, it had reached its destination - Chicago! The following year, the Illinois Central Railway became part of the America's West Railway.
