In 1887, residents voted to change the township's name to "Melrose Park," after Sarah Marshall—a woman who had played an important role in helping organize the Chicago theater scene during its earliest days—and her husband Edwin Guggenheim purchase some 1,000 acres (400 ha) of forested land north of Wabash Avenue between State Street and Oak Lawn Drive for future development into what is now Midtown Chicago. The Guggenheim family continued to play an important role in shaping Melrose Park through their donations to various organizations over time: they donated $5 million toward building Wabash University; gave away more than $100 million worth of assets such as real estate and stocks; purchased 800 acres (300 ha) of forestland east of Wabash Avenue; created numerous parks including Roosevelt Island Lakefront park; built many homes throughout suburban Cook County;[2] and sponsored numerous events such as golf tournaments at Willow Glen Golf Club or Sentosa Day Spa & Golf Resort on Islands National Wildlife Refuge south ofChicago
