Gun lights first started appearing in Melrose Park, Illinois in the early 1800s. At this time, there were no police or sheriff's departments and residents would carry firearms for protection. Many of these pistols were made from muzzle Loading guns which required a powder charge to fire the ball. The use of gun lights allowed people to see their surroundings better while hunting or crime prevention purposes. At some point, the practice of using gun lights as a warning began to be replaced by personal light signals. In recent years, many municipalities have started using LED light bars as means of displaying gun lights in order to warn drivers and pedestrians about potential danger ahead.

Melrose Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is the namesake of the Melrose Park branch of the Chicago Public Library. The population was 21,083 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Melrose Park was Abram Van Slyke (1809-1872), who arrived on July 4, 1837. He built a log cabin on what is now Van Slyke Road and named it "Van Dyke". In 1838 he married Nancy Hinkle (1812-1890). Abram and Nancy had four children: Abram (b. 1840), Emily (b. 1842), John Leland (b. 1845) and Caroline Van Dyke (b. 1847). In 1860, Abram's son John Leland purchased 350 acres of land from his father for $1,000 cash and renamed it "Melrose Park". On May 25, 1863 Abraham and Nancy Leland donated an additional 100 acres to the Township for parkland use – this area included present day Old Hyde Park as well as much of Cicero Street between Randolph Road and Higgins Avenue. John Leland also donated trees, flowers and a pond to be used by residents for swimming when desired; these assets were used to create today's parkland including most of North Shore Drive between Randolph Road and Higgins Avenue as well as parts of Clybourne Boulevard east of Lake Michigan Drive. On November 11, 1865 Abraham Van Dyke died at age 80 years after a long illness in his home on North Shore Drive in front of the Chicago Defender office where he had worked since 1888; his wife Nancy preceded him in death two days later at age 82 years old at their home on Clybourne Boulevard near White Sox Stadium where she had lived since her husband's death 15 years earlier

The city was named after Melrose Abbey in England, which had been founded in 1837 by English missionaries. The city's growth continued through World War I and into the 1920s, when it reached its peak population size. However, Melrose Park's reputation as a sleepy agricultural town began to decline during the Roaring Twenties.During World War II, Melrose Park became an important military base for American forces stationed in Europe. The city also played an important role in providing housing for servicemen and their families. In 1951, Melrose Park merged with nearby Round Lake Beach to form one of the largest Urban Areas in Illinois.Since then, Melrosse Park has experienced rapid growth and transformation – becoming one ofthe most vibrant cities in southern Illinois.Today, Melrosse Park is a progressive community where residents are engaged in many aspects of their community life including education, healthcare, economic development and social activism."
Melrose Park was originally part of the Town of Aurora. It was platted in 1836 and named for a small wooded area near the junction of present-day Melrose Avenue and Irving Road. The first settler to arrive in what is now Melrose Park was James K. Polk, who came overland from Missouri in 1839. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became a city in 1868. The first mayor of Melrose Park was Charles Dickens, who served from 1870 to 1872. In 1886, the city acquired land adjacent to Chicago's Brandon Street for its new municipal building, which still stands today (though much demolished). The original City Hall building is also currently used as an adult daycare center. In 1914, the city built a new football stadium on north side of Western Avenue that has been used by both the Bears and Blackhawks since 1959. As part of NATO military operations during World War II, the stadium hosted air shows by Douglas Aircraft Corporation during 1942 and 1943; these were eventually cancelled due to bad weather conditions. The city added two more wards in 1961: one on the east side and one on the west side (the latter including parts of Near North Side). This resulted in a total population increase to 248 people when it became a city again in 1968—the largest increase any municipality has seen since its creation as an incorporated village in 1865. In 1995, Mayor Richard Molloy announced plans for development along Bloomingdale Boulevard between Wilson Boulevard and Dearborn Street which would have transformed downtown into a large mixed-use project with office space, housing, retail stores, etc., but this plan never came to fruition due to financial difficulties experienced by developers at that time.
