Melrose Park, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,476 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Melrose Park was incorporated on November 14th, 1867 and named for Avenue Q in London's Hyde Park district. The first post office in Melrose Park opened on December 5th, 1870. The first store in the village was built by Wm. Hargrave & Son and became known as the "Hargrave Inn." On July 1st, 1876, Melrose Park annexed the neighboring villages of Crystal Lake and Deerfield Village. On October 15th of that year, all four villages were merged into one municipality with a population of 508 people. On January 1st, 1907, part of Deerfield Village (now Lombard) moved to Melrose Park from Glencoe which at that time had a population of 10K people! This event has been chronicled by local historian Forrest Pogue as one of "the great city annexations" in Cook County history - it allowed for more housing development near campus without having to move any residents! In 1915-16 there was an election where incumbent mayor James Dolan ran unopposed against challenger Harry Heineman; this marked what would become an annual tradition for Dolan - he always won reelection without running against anyone! In 1916-17 Mayor John McCormick faced an opponent but still won re-election due to his large majorities in both houses! In 1920 Mayor Burton Kapp did not run for re-election after serving two terms; Kapp resigned effective August 6th and his successor George Ahern appointed him acting mayor until a mayoral election could be held! In 1924 Mayor Charles Jorgensen ran uncontested against City Councilmember Angelo Lonardi Jr.; Lonardi finished third with 27% of the vote while Jorgensen took home 93% of the vote (a record at that time). Charlie Chaplin wasn't born yet so Illinois didn't have its own state government

Melrose Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,685 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The township was organized on March 15, 1847 and named for the estate of Melrose Park House, which had been built in 1836 by John Marshall Blackstone as a summer home for his sister-in-law Louisa May Alcott. The remains of that house are still standing in the town center. The first post office in Melrose Park was established on October 16, 1853. The first store in town was opened by J.H. Haggerty on December 12, 1854. In 1860, two churches were built: First Methodist and Second Presbyterian. On November 7th of that year voters approved a proposition to add an addition to both churches - a schoolhouse - which would have housed a teachers' training school for girls until such time as the legislature could provide funds for such an institution; this addition became known as White Hall School (later River Oaks School). In 1865, three more stores were opened: A & W Grocery Store on West Adams Street near Rush Street; Pemberton's Tobacco Shop on North Avenue; and Sprague & Sons Hardware at 124th and Cicero Streets. By 1870 there were twelve businesses operating in town with over 200 residents employed therein:twenty-one blacksmiths (including one who operated his forge out of his home); six farmers; four grocery merchants; two physicians (Drury and Drury & Co., who did surgery); four clergymen (Anglican and Methodist Episcopal) A hotel called "The Albion" opened its doors at 133rd/Michigan Avenue in 1895 when it became apparent that no other building large enough to accommodate passengers interested in staying within walking distance of downtown Chicago had been erected since the original Northwestern Hotelclosed down around 1850 due to fire damage from lack of insurance rates paid by guests". It attracted many well-known Chicagoans including theater managers James Mott and Edwin Booth along with their wives Nancie McDowell and May McNeill Booth while also hosting visiting dignitaries including Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria during his visit to Chicago due to pandemic conditions then raging across Europe at that time...the hotel continued serving refreshments into Prohibition era years..In 1924 it burned down but was rebuilt under new ownership as "The Ambassador", later being renamed "Lincoln". After World War II Lincoln reopened as just "Lincoln" again until it closed again following another fire in 1958 leaving only storage units behind before all operations stopped completely..It then reopened under new management as simply "Lincoln" once more until it too closed up shop following another fire some years later.. finally closing its doors permanently after 40 years operation! Today remnants can be seen inside what used to be the old Lobby level where services used to be provided daily from 1969 thru 2008 inclusive
