Melrose Park, Illinois was founded in 1847 by businessman and politician George Washington Hughes. The city was named for the estate ofPrince Melrose in Scotland, which Hughes had purchased in 1835. This order led directly to many famous objects being seized by the United States government during World War II including many cars from Detroit automakers like Cadillac and Ford Motor Company . Beginning in 1951, Mayor Harry Bendix started using his position as Mayor pro tempore (i.e., acting mayor) to make recommendations about important issues affecting communities across Cook County at-large including whether they should become municipalities or not; however this power ultimately ended when Bendix resigned effective February 1st 1967 due to term limits set forth by then-Governor Richard Manges after he won election that year with 54% of the vote over challenger Harold Washington Jr.. A new Mayor was selected through an election held on November 3rd following Bendix’s resignation; but because no one received over 50% percent of votes cast they appointed Julius Eisenson who served until January 7th 1978 when he was succeeded by Peter Shih who served until September 5th 1984 when he was replaced by John Ziegler who served until December 15th 1992 when he was replaced by James Thompson who served until May 14th 1996 when Thompson announced his candidacy for Governor against Rod Blagojevich . Thompson lost both elections but remains popular among residents due largely to his work improving transportation infrastructure specifically around Wrigley Field . On July 12th 1999 then-Mayor Thompson announced that he would be running for re-election rather than pursue other opportunities such as becoming a television commentator or lobbyist; however this announcement failed to generate much enthusiasm among residents so he decided not run again .
