In 1836 Abraham Lincoln was elected President and his brother Tad became Secretary of State; both men lived nearby for many years before moving away for political reasons in 1865. In 1847 David Herter established Herter Mercantile Co., one of Illinois' earliest successful small businesses; it remained an important player until 1971 when it merged with DuPont Paper into DuPont duPont plc.. On January 1, 1857, the town was renamed after General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Child. The name change reflected their role as two of the first people to live in what is now Melrose Park.
