The population of Mchenry increased from 585 to 1,053 by 1990. In 2000, the local paper reported that there were only 49 residents living within a half mile of the community's central business district and only 10 residents who could speak English fluently. According to the 2010 census, 99% of all households are made up of individuals and 0% are married couples with children under 18 years old. The median household income for a family is $55,625 and the median age is 44 years old. Males have a median income of $37,500 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,812. About 5% of families and 7% of the population are belowthe poverty line; including 10%of those under age 18 and 8%of those aged 65 or over

In 1839, German scientist Johann Friedrich Struve developed an improved telescope called the Struve Telescope which could be used for astronomical observations. This instrument allowed scientists to see objects that had not been seen before and helped improve our understanding of astronomy. In 1915, Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov built a powerful new telescope called the Laika Observatory which was eventually destroyed by a fire. This event demonstrated how important it is for scientists to have access to good equipment so they can study nature in detail. In 1881, Jesse W. Mchenry and his family moved from Illinois to Mchenry, Illinois. The land was purchased on the banks of the Missouri River for $1,000. Jesse started a small farm with his two brothers and their families. He also worked on the farm as a field hand and went to school in town. Jesse's parents died when he was young and he was raised by his grandparents. WhenJesse turned eighteen in 1892, he decided to take up farming full time and bought his own place on the farm. In 1916, Jesse married Bertha (Bessie) Moody who had been born in Rock Island County, Illinois in 1868. They had three children: Barbara (1918-2002), John (1920-1986), and Dorothy (1924-1994). TheMchenyrys continued to live on the farm until they sold it in 1984 to Dick & Carolyn Ziegler for $115,000. At that time it became known as "The Farmhouse at Mchenry".
