Pepsi-Cola Corporation was founded in 1895 by Dr Pepper Snapple Group founder Robert Hogue Sr. There are numerous stories about how this company came about; however, one story is particularly colorful. The community was founded in 1837 by John and Nancy (Macco) McNamara. It was named for General James McNamara, who fought in the American Revolution. From 1840 to 1843, it served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1865, McNamara's brother-in-law Paddy Donnelly started a grocery store in Mchenry and remains its owner to this day. In 1984, Donnelly donated land to McHenry County for use as an airport runway and hangar complex. The McNamara family tree includes three generations of mayors: Mayor Tom Foley (1948-1957), Mayor Eugene McCarthy (1975-1981), and Mayor Rahm Emanuel (2006-2015). The mayor of Mchenry from 1982 to 2015 was Democrat Jane Byrne; she had been elected unopposed twice before but lost her bid for re-election after being term limited due to previous service as Cook County Commissioner. A brewery was established in 1865 and a railroad came through in 1887. The population of Mchenry peaked at around 500 people in 1912 but declined after World War I killed many of the original residents.
