Mchenry is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census and 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that makes up Mchenry was first settled by French Canadians in 1753. A post office called McHenry was established in 1813, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The community name derives from Captain John Hennepin's phrase "Mahanury Township" as he explored this area for a fur traders company looking for new markets for their products. The first settler to arrive on the current site of Mchenry was George Washington Carver who built a cabin here around 1868. A flour mill started operation near the present day intersection of North First Street and West Main Street in 1871; it continued operations until 1935. In 1865, James Mclntyre donated land to the village for public school purposes; this parcel included what is now Old Main Drive and South Third Street. The first schools were built here: a schoolhouse and a Methodist church (1872). In 1893, when an act authorizing incorporation of townships became law, McMheny Township included parts of what are now Northwest Side (northwest Cook) and Farwell Township (southwest Cook). At that time, only about one-third of all residents lived within municipal boundaries; most residents lived outside town on smaller farms or rural parcels annexed to municipalities over time. On July 15th 1927 - just shy of ninety years after its incorporation -Mcheny Township achieved statehood with passage of legislation by then Governor Edward Gassaway Jr.. On October 3rd 1932 - less than two years after its establishment -the township had 774 acres annexed into it from farwell township! This significant milestone represented an increasing trend towards consolidation as more people began moving into larger townships across Cook County during this time period – including McCormick Place east suburban development taking place just north of downtown Chicago which would encompass much more space than what had been available within Mcheny Township itself! Today there are over 12K inhabitants living within Municipal boundaries while many others residing on larger tracts annexed over time…..A total population size today stands at almost 16K!!!

John McHenry also became a well-known lawyer in the area. John Haines McNamara settled in the same town as the McDermotts in 1859. He was a carpenter and builder who built many homes and businesses in Mchenry. His son Michael McNamara served as Mayor of Mchenry from 1974 to 1978 and 1984 to 1986. Michael McNamara is also buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Mchenry. The community of McHenrysburg was founded by Danville natives George Mears and his wife Ann on December 7, 1892 when they moved from Danville to start a grocery store called the "Mears Store." The store continued operation until it burned down on November 30, 1893 due to an electrical fire that started while workers were installing new lights inside the store
As of the 2010 census, Mchenry had a population of 5,914. The town was organized in 1837 and named after General James McHenry who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1860, it was renamed for Abraham Lincoln who was then serving as the President of the United States. The post office closed in 1918 and is now known as Illinois Central Station.
