Mchenry, Illinois was founded on November 15, 1837 by James H. Mchenry and his wife Anna. The town was named for Captain John Henniker of the United States Army's 1st Infantry Regiment which fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1852, the first settler, Isaac G. Huffman, arrived and built a log cabin. By 1855, there were six settlers living in Mchenry. A post office was established in 1856 and remained in operation until it closed in 1922. The first school was built in 1857 and operated for one year before being shut down due to financial difficulties. The first store opened in 1860 and continued to operate until it closed in 1909.
