Mchenry is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of McHenry was organized on January 1, 1871 by order of the General Assembly as a result of the act passage December 12, 1870 which created (1) McHenry County and (2) an apportionment of representatives in Congress to be based on population size within each county. In addition to its own post office and jail, McHenry had also been granted two school districts with common schools for both sexes and one for girls only. On July 6, 1876, voters approved a new charter giving it city status with full voting rights; however this did not become effective until November 9th when city officials were given authority to levy taxes (initially $1 per capita). In 1901-1902 a new freight depot was built by A.B. Morton & Company on the site now occupied by McCormick Place Shopping Center and other businesses that have since moved out including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Corporation and Kresge's department store. The old depot was razed in 1955-1956 along with all other buildings associated with it; today only trace remnants remain from its heyday as an important transportation hub in central Illinois. As early as 1893 there were plans to rename McHenry after John Fenton Mckenna who donated land for a town center but those plans never came to fruition due to lack of funding or opposition from neighbors who saw the towncenter as primarily residential instead of commercial or cultural amenities like libraries or music halls like they had envisioned back east where McKenna's family originated from. After much debate between trustees and citizens over what name should be chosen for the proposed town center(the trustees ultimately chose "Mchenry" because it sounded more English), finally on May 10th 1894Vote took place with 50% against "Mchenry" while 50% in favor resulted in naming the proposed town center "Fentontown". Mchenry was founded in 1836 by James and Calvina McNairy. The McNairy family operated a small store in the town until the early 1800s, when they relocated to Decatur, Illinois.
