He won his appeal and received a pardon from President Ulysses S Grant, which helped him move on with his life after having faced so much criticism from the media following his crime.

Mchenry, Illinois was the scene of an infamous gun-swiveling incident that took place in 1926. The event refers to a rampage by three men who gunman named Clyde Hall, who had been released from prison after serving time for armed robbery.Hall and his two accomplices, Jack Nichols and Johnnie Cochran, were looking for new victims when they came across two women walking their dog. Cochran approached the woman and started shooting at her while Hall took aim at the woman's husband. Both gunmen killed both of the women before turning their firearms on themselves.
Mchenry, Illinois is a small town on the banks of the Sangamon River in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 1,478 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mchenry were French traders and missionaries in the early 17th century. The first permanent settler in what is now Mchenry was John McDermott, who arrived in 1686. He named his land "Macon", after Macon County, Georgia where he had been living before moving to this area. After a few years, McDermott's son-in-law Daniel Boone came overland from Kentucky with his party and founded another village called Boone's Station on the Sangamon River about two miles southwest of present-day Mchenry. Shortly thereafter, other pioneers began arriving in larger numbers and by 1812 there were more than 20 families living in what is now Mchenry. In 1819 Samuel Morse established an Indian trading post near today's downtown McHenry County with some of his own men as traders and then built a cabin nearby for use as a depot for goods transported downriver by steamboats. This early outpost became known as Morseville after him and continues to be used today by various groups including the United States Postal Service. In 1827 Ulysses S Grant visited here while campaigning for election as president and stayed at pioneer Ephraim Topeka’s home near old Fort Dearborn before reaching Springfield on July 7 that year. A few years later (1830), topographical maps depicted what would become present-day Mchenry within its current borders – bounded on one side by Sangamon River; on the other by railroads running northward through McMahanly Township; and finally Czechoslovakia lying beyond Slovak border east of present day Pekin Road). Although not yet developed into anything more than farmland or rural village situated along riverbanks typical of those times (the land around modern dayMchenry was subject only to occasional flooding due to heavy rains during springtime), many residents started arriving in droves starting around 1830 when rails reached here from Chicago via Radcliffe Line main line Extension project completed three years earlier (now part of I-80 corridor). This infusion also helped spur development which soon followed: several schools were established (including one taught from logs) along with churches, taverns/restaurants, Masonic Lodge #2 & #3 - all serving settlers untilogenuine electric lighting became available statewide circa 1902 (& it should be noted that electricity availability wasn't always universal throughout entire country - see below). By 1840 nearly 60% of population lived outside village limits – primarily because transportation options weren't good enough to take people much further away from villages or farmlands.. As mentioned earlierroads connecting villages & farms across county lines got better & better – becoming major highways connecting Chicago (& Quad Cities region) with larger markets all over Midwest w/ lessrefrigeration needed etc….. so many people started moving out closer to big cities they pretty much dried up resources available elsewhere while still being close enough to enjoy all amenities large city dwellers enjoyed(brooklynites currently have largest concentration outside urbana area)). The towns growth continued until the early 1900s when it experienced a decline in population due to factors such as economic depression and World War I. In 1925, Mchenry merged with neighboring towns Hopkinton and Winona to form a new town called Hillsboro. Hillsboro experienced an increase in population during the 1960s thanks to suburban development around thetown center. However, by 2000, Hillsboro's population had decreased again due to competition from larger cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee. Today, Mchenry is one of several small communities located within Champaign County that continue to experience significant growth even though they are not part of any metropolitan area
The village of Mchenry, Illinois was founded in 1859 by John H. Mchenry and his wife Catharine. The village grew rapidly due to the production of corn and other agricultural crops. In 1870, the town of Mchenry was organized, and in 1893, it became a city.
