He built a gristmill there which still operates; also grated cheese and eggs for local customers until 1865 when a new gristmill was built across the river near present day Urbana. In 1836, David Fenton platted what is now Bloomington intotesquely large lots on625 acres (250 hectares) of rolling countryside just south of present-day Springfield . Bloomington became known as America's largest city by 1840 due to its growth as a result of trade with Chicago and other parts of North America. In 1857 Bloomington incorporated as a village under the name "Bloomfield", but this name lasted only 10 years before being dropped because residents objected to having their village linked with downtown Chicago via one street while they lived on different sides of the tracks from their employers and political leaders! It wasn't until 1915 that Bloomington finally got its own post office after several failed attempts over more than 25 years!
On February 14, 1847, the first organized town in Mchenry was founded. The town was named after General James H. McIntosh who fought in the Mexican-American War.
