Mchenry, Illinois is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 709 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1857 and named for Major General James Fenton McHenry, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first settlers in what is now Mchenry were families of Scottish immigrants who came to America around 1795. They erected a cabin on a hill overlooking the new town and started trading with other pioneer communities in central Illinois. In 1807, John Rankin bought land from Commander David Dixon for $8 per acre and started Cultivating Rice on his farmstead which became one of the earliest rice plantations in America. In 1830, Daniel Boone moved to this area from Kentucky with his family and began cattle ranching operations that are still operating today. He named his ranch "Mountain Meadows" after nearby Mount Vernon where George Washington lived at the time (the mountain had been renamedMount Vernon by British colonists). According to local history, when Timothy Leary visited this area while he was President Eisenhower's Special Assistant for Science and Technology during World War II he stayed at Mountain Meadows Ranch during one of his visits there and praised its “ingenuity” as well as its “rugged beauty." A few years later some friends/acquaintances ofLeary's acquired an old windmill that stood on a knoll just outside of town on property owned by Jens Pohlmeyer (a close friend), which they restored into a tourist attraction known as "Timothy Leary's Mill".
Mchenry is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,938 at the 2010 census. The Village of Mchenry was organized in 1872. It is named after General James H. McDermott, who led Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War and later served as an officer in the Union Army and as Mayor of Springfield, Illinois from 1881 to 1886. The first settler in what is now Mchenry was John McNeely who arrived there on April 20, 1837. He named the place "McHenry" after his father-in-law Colonel Henry Mclntyre who had built a house there that year. A post office called "McHenry" was established at this location on July 10, 1837; it served until September 12, 1865 when it became part of Springfield Township. In 1870 John McNeely married Catharine (Kate) Fenton he had been living with her sister Susan Ewing since November 14th of that year Previous to this they were living with their Aunt Sarah Ann Greening and Uncle Cornelius Greening at 608 2nd Street which is now known as "Greening Place." On June 3rd of that year two men by the name of Holmes came overland from Decatur County Indiana bound for Quincy where they were going to purchase goods needed for their journey They asked if any one wanted them to stay but no one did so they continued on their way On July 25th1870 three more men by the name of McClendon & Kearney also came overland from Decatur County Indiana They told us they went into Quincy to get some things and when they got back out they found all sorts of prodigal children running around There wasn't a soul near them except Catharine & John McNeely Whereupon our Kate took her husband home with her she has always lived here ever since then This property extends back about four miles On August 15th 1870 we lost our only son John McNeely age 21 years old he died young while serving his country
