Mchenry is a town in the northwestern corner of Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Mchenry" comes from an earlyen settlement called McNairy which was located on the banks of the Big Muddy River near present-day McHenry County and Cook County. This site would later be renamed to McHenry after James H. McHenry who served as Collector General for Illinois from 1847 to 1850 and then became Governor of Indiana Territory from 1852 to 1857. In March 1835, John Dickey founded what would become known as Dickey's Prairie School in what is now McHenry County. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln visited this school while he was campaigning for election as President and described it as "a model educational institution". Dickey's Prairie School closed in 1886 but reopened in 1890 under new management with its original buildings again used. It closed again in 1916 but reopened again during World War I with new buildings built on the same site. During World War II it operated as a YMCA before closing again due to lack of use after 1945 This school became known as Community Bible Institute (CBI) following its reopening in 1990 . It merged with another community bible institute called Covenant Christian Academy (CCC) on July 1st 2006 forming McChenry-Convenant Christian Schools Incorporated (). CBI remained under that name until May 31st 2018 when it changed back to McChenry-Convenant Christian Schools Incorporated (). As per their website; “McChenry- ConvenantChristian Schools has been providing quality education since 1990! We are excited about our newest addition – Covenant Christian Academy!” According to the 2000 census, there were 993 people living in Mchenrytownships A1 through G2 combined with an additional 524 residents in three villages: Eagle Pointe Village, Hermitage Heights Village and White Sands Village situated east of town within Cook County : these 4 villages had a total population of 2,576 according to their 2000 census forms . According to 2011 US Census data , those residing within McClhenytownships A1 through G2 totaled 1,811 people including 723 males and 621 females

In 1847, John Hickey founded the village of McHenry on the east side of the river near what is now Mount Prospect Cemetery. The town's first post office was established in 1850 and its first store in 1861. According to the 2008 census figures, Mchenry has a total area of 0.92 square miles (2 km²). The original inhabitants of this small community included Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived between 1839 and 1840 as part of the Great Famine that struck Ireland during that decade; American Indians; Irishmen from County Clare who had come overland from Limerick following the Wolfe Tone Rebellion in 1798; black slaves brought over by planters along with their white owners during the period between 1830 and 1865; German Lutherans who had been driven out of their homeland by religious persecution during that same time period; Italian Catholics who had emigrated to America since 1800s; Polish Catholics who had come to North America during or after World War II; as well as transient workers such as Germans and Italians recruited for short-term labor opportunities across America during those years
