In 1836, John Mchenry founded the town of Mchenry in Illinois. The community was named after his father, a judge in Indiana. By 1840, the town had a population of about 100 people and was located on the east side of the Illinois River. In 1849, John Mchenry donated land to build a school and college in what is now Mchenry Township. The first building was built in 1850 and it served as the township hall until 1958. John Mchenry died in 1852 and his son James took over operation of the business. James opened up a variety of businesses including farmlands, lumber mills, groceries and other services before retiring in 1966. The town has developed into an agricultural center with several thousand residents. A number of local institutions have been established including: McHenrys Academy (now known as John F Kennedy High School), Garden District Hospital, State Fairgrounds and Smith-McHenry Library which is also home to one of Illinois' two professional theaters
In 1824, Surveyor General James McHenry prepared a map of Illinois. He named the new state after his friend and mentor, General John Adams. The general did this in order to create a sense of identity for the newly founded state.
