Maywood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,575 at the 2010 census. Maywood is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the east side of Chicago and is bordered by Belmont to the north, Mount Greenwood to the east, Austin Park to the south, and West Side Highway to the west. The name "Maywood" originally meant "place where trees grow." The first settlers in what would become Maywood were farmers who arrived from Vermont in 1827. They founded a farm called Elm Grove on what is now Maple Avenue. By 1830, they had bought land that included present-day Maywood and began to cultivate maize, beans, and other vegetables. In 1835 they erected a log cabin known as White's Cabin which still stands today. In 1840 they built a two-story frame house on North Milwaukee Street which became their home for over sixty years until it was sold in 1978 and demolished. In 1847 John Schieffer purchased some land northwest of present-day Maywood from Ebenezer Cobb for $150 cash. He soon commenced farming here with his family and started growing corn, wheat, potatoes, appleseeds (a type of oilseed), sunflowers (hemp seeds), cotton seedlings (for making thread), buttercups (a type of bird food), eggs; made cheese;kerosene lamps; wagons drawn by horses or oxen; and an early form of electric lighting using kerosene lamps inserted into an open wire grid under ground.) Soon he had svnited around forty acres including present day Maywood with four houses: One built in1848 on property now owned by Northwestern Mutual Tower Building Company called Block House #2127 Elm Grove Road.,now owned by Pritzker Pavilion Corporation.;The second house predated both blocks but was destroyed in fire about 1910.. The third house also predates both blocks but burned down about 1925.. Maywood was founded in 1824 by a group of volunteers from the town of Newton. The town was named for General John May, who led an expedition to open up new territory in Illinois. The village was first settled on land that is now the eastern edge of Maywood Township. In 1829, the first school was built and part of it still stands today. A Mechanicsville Road connected Maywood with Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania until it was destroyed by fire in 1868. In 1865, the first post office opened in Maywood and continued to serve until 1907. In 1924, the name of the town changed to Maywood Heights after being selected as one of six communities in DuPage County that would be given this name. In 1964, two-thirds of all residents in Maywood were voting citizens when they approved a bill authorizing annexation by Addison Township. On October 1st following this vote, Addison Township became fully independent from Maywood and adopted its own municipal government under a new name - Addison Heights Borough.
