Maywood is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first white people to live in Maywood were Planters and their families who arrived from Kentucky in 1836. A post office was established at Maywood on December 10, 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 8, 1896. A gristmill was built by Nathan Bogan in 1847 and continued to be used until it burned down in 1903. A sawmill also began operations in 1847 and became operational until it also burned down in 1903. In 1886, an oil refinery called the Maywood Oil Company was established at the intersection of State Street and Wabash Avenue. The company operated for ten years before being forced to close because of Prohibition laws that had been enacted by America during that time period. In 1907, a new school building was constructed at 404 Wabash Avenue which served as the original home of Maywood High School (now Griggs Middle School). That same year saw the opening of Bataviaia Post Office which served as a branch of Griggs Post Office until 1917 when it closed due to lack of mail service within McHenry County during World War I. The first post office open for business outside McHenry County occurred on November 12, 1916 when BataviaiaPostOffice opened at 5555 Niles Road inside what is now Northwestern Illinois University's campus buildings along with its then-new annex located just north of Ulysses S Grant Drive adjacent to Northwestern's Law School Building which would later become known as Shaw University Place after Shaw purchased most of what is now Northwestern's campus buildings including those currently housing UI's baseball stadium/dormitory complex as well as other assorted buildings between Niles Road/University Place and Grant Drive/Schelling Drive) This inaugurated a tradition whereby different parts or campuses within UI have their own unique postal services provider throughout their respective campuses making life much more convenient & easier for students (& staff!) while still supporting intercampus cooperation thru shared services! In addition to providing excellent customer service ensuing thru many years of continuous use; this particular POST OFFICE ALSO PROVED STRONG BACKERS & PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS DURING THEIR FIRST YEAR OF OPERATIONS!! During World War II; all aspects Of Our Business were disrupted Which caused Our Manager To Retire But We continued TO Operate As A NON-profit Corporation Under The Name "UPSCO" Until OUR LAST DAY IN DECEMBER OF 2008 WHEN WE CLOSED OUR BUSINESS AS A POSSIBLE COORDINATION FOR THE REopening Of MAYWOOD HOMES BY THE MAYWOOD POLICE DISTRICT AFTER WILLIAM CAMPBELL WAS ELECTED AS NEW MANAGER! After his election; we reopened our business as "Maywood Police Department" And continue to serve our community since then!

The area was part of the Northwest Territory and later the Indiana Territory. In 1818, Maywood became a village under the jurisdiction of Rock Island Township. On January 1, 1837, it merged with neighboring village of Urbana to form what is now Maywood Township. In 1871, when Illinois became a state, Maywood became one of its largest townships with a population of over 10,000 people. It lost some land to annexation by Chicago in 1906 but regained most of its territory until 1996 when it was amalgamated with Hoffman Estates intoChicago's Near North Side neighborhood. On April 20th 1865 during The Civil War Confederate General Joseph Ewing surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House in Virginia following his successful siege and capture of Petersburg Peninsula from Union forces commanded by General Ulysses S Grant. Many residents evacuating Richmond for fear for their lives brought their furniture and household goods westward along the Potomac River to may wood where they stored them on Carpenter Street between 3rd and 4th Streets until relieved by Federal troops on April 24th 1865 just before dawn after an eight-day Siege which began on March 25th 1865 and ended on April 29th 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House after losing all hiscommunications with Richmond except for requests for food and ammunition which he received through messengers while sheltering inside Confederate lines near Suffolk junction (now Arlington Heights) north of Petersburg Plantation north of appomattox court house
