Maywood is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Maywood comes from "majer" or "grandmother". The first settlers in what is now Maywood were Quakers from Pennsylvania. In 1839, General James K. Polk and his troops passed through the community on their way to victory in the Mexican-American War. After that event, many of the old residents started moving out of Maywood as it became more convenient for other parts of Illinois. The first post office was established in 1841 and was named after Colonel Isaac Brockman, who donated land for it. The population of Maywood rapidly grew after this and by 1870 there were over 1,000 people living there. By 1915, when prohibition began to be enforced in America, most of the businesses had closed down and most of the residents had left too. However, a few prominent citizens survived until prohibition ended in 1933; these include Mrs John Fenton (founder and president of Fenton Foods), Mrs Alice Pace (founder and CEO/chairperson emeritus of Pace Jewelry), Dr Edward Coyle (creator/director/writer/producer of science fiction TV series Star Trek: The Original Series) and Mayor Harry Blackmun (a Ulysses S Grant appointee). In 1938 a new elementary school was built near where present day Route 66 meets Interstate 55; this school served as the nucleus for future schools located throughout town including high school which opened its doors to students on August 15th 1947; currently known as Central High School may have been Built earlier but no record exists to support this claim
