A post office was established in 1871; it became known as "Maywood" after the name of Jarvis' mill complex. In 1899, Maywood had just seven residents when Wm. Ewing opened the first successful corn ethanol plant in Illinois. The town's growth continued through World War I and into the 1920s with heavy industry including a munitions plant (1924), an automotive parts factory (1927), and an agricultural development called "The Gables", which included more than 100 homes (1928).During World War II, many factories closed due to wartime production restrictions; however, Maywood did not experience any major damage from bombing or fire as other towns did across Du Page County
