As early as 1814, the Maywood Rifle Club had a small arsenal consisting of six rifles. In 1851, the club upgraded their weapons to a more modern design and began using an oil-fired cannon. In 1865, the club became known as the "Maywood Rifle Association." The first use of live rounds in American shooters' history occurred at this event. In 1903, the rifle association moved from its original location on Locust Street in Maywood to Union Depot on State Street in downtown Springfield. In 1912, they added a pistol range which continues to be used today. In 1951, the rifle association changed its name to "The Rifleman" after becoming part of the Illinois Rifle Association. The organization was renamed again in 1978 when it merged with other rifle organizations within Illinois'ssportsmen's federation into one statewide organization called "The Sportsmen's Federation of Illinois." That same year, they also began using electronic sights and handguns were made available for purchase through their store chain.

It grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s as farmers moved into the area to escape political unrest in nearby Chicago. By 1860, Maywood had a population of over 100 people. The town developed an agricultural economy with crops such as corn, beans, oats, and wheat being widely traded through local markets. During the American Civil War, Maywood became a center for support for the Union side. Many businesses in the town closed their doors due to lack of income or customer loyalty Confederate sympathizers found in their midst. However, many residents refused to abandon their homes and continue supporting the Confederacy despite this hardship. Aftermath of the war led to a decrease in population due to natural attrition rather than displacement; however, many notable founders including Deacon Samuel W. May Jr., still reside in town today (though most are now deceased). In 1865, maywood was annexed by Joliet Township making it one of its first suburbs within Illinois’ newly formed state government system which replaced federal government control over west-central Illinois following Abraham Lincoln’s election as President of America on November 6th that year. At that time Joliet Township had a population of only 2,500 people while Maywood had a population of over 100 people! With new development coming up around Joliet Township – including Mundelein Lakefront Park – much growth occurred within both towns during this time frame as well; however much less is known about what happened to maywood after annexation until recently when it was added back onto our list of communities along with other former towns located inside Joliet Township since 2001!
