Maywood, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Maywood community first settled in 1848 when three families from Indiana moved to what is now eastern McLean County. They named their new village Maywood after President James K. Polk's home state of Missouri. The residents of Maywood built their homes out of logs and sod and pioneer churches were erected soon thereafter. By 1860, most of the original settlers had passed away, but two families from Ohio remained until 1870 when they also died out. Maywood was platted in 1872 by Jens Sorenson who had purchased land east of Decatur on which he established a sawmill and gristmill; These mills became known as "Sorenson's Mills". In 1886, Mr. Sorenson donated $10K to build the current Methodist church located at 330 Elm Street (later renamed First United Methodist Church). The present day school District No 16 was organized in 1925 with students coming from surrounding towns including Decatur, Arlington Heights, Bloomington Hills and many others that would later become part of Springfield-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as Maywood itself during the late 1920s and early 1930s following consolidation efforts by local school districts across Northwest Illinois into one larger district under Superintendent Harry Pritzker who then served until his retirement in 1975 In 1933 a gas station/diner opened up on Elm street near the corner with Wisconsin Avenue providing fuel and food for locals until it closed down around 1980 due to competition from more modern stores such as Safeway . A post office opened at 230 Elm Street on November 10th 1903 which continued serving residents until it closed down on December 15th 1978 due to low mail volume . A fire destroyed most of the buildings on Elm street between Wisconsin Avenue & Maple Road about 1940 however some remain standing today including Ladies Home Journal building which still has its original business window

Maywood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 2,813. It was founded on what is now the Maywood Road by David and Deborah Maywood in 1853. The name may derive from "mahogany", meaning "a tree with soft white wood" because of the abundance of that tree in the area. The Village was incorporated on December 4, 1875. The first post office opened in 1876 and closed in 1898. The first school was opened in 1878 and closed in 1886; it reopened as an elementary school in 1906 and closed again in 1978. The first Methodist church was built there in 1903. In 1925, Maywood became home to one of the five sites for testing for World War II atomic bombs; it lost its status as a town after test results were released indicating no danger to humans or property from those tests. In 1949, when Maywood's ZIP code was changed from 61904 to 62434 due to population growth within that area during that decade (due to suburban development), the old town boundaries were restored - including extensive annexation of adjacent towns: Maple Grove (now part of Elmhurst), Prospect Heights (now part of Lombard), Ridgway Heights (now part of Hammondsport), Schaumburg Heights (now part of Joliet). This created a communities-within-communities feeling among many residents who had grown up living separate but neighboring villages within their own municipalities... In 2001, following approval by voters via referendum,[1] Mayor Dick Seiler announced plans for construction at two parks located near downtown - which eventually included baseball diamonds/ playgrounds/fishing ponds/pool hall capable housing[2][3][4] - as well as eventual annexation into other municipalities while still retaining its own governance structures and community functions.[5] After yearslong planning process,[6][7][8][9] demolition began on July 10th 2002 with final occupancy starting on October 3rd 2003.[10][11][12][13],[14] leaving behind an rapidly growing mixed-use development complete with storespace along one side and high rise buildings along another side within view of Metra tracks running through town center
Maywood was founded in 1811 by John May and his family. The town became a post office in 1821. It became a city in 1868.
