Maywood is a small village in Illinois, United States. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Cook County, Illinois Metro area. Maywood is located in eastern Cook County on the southern edge of Chicago. The Village of Maywood was organized on November 15, 1847 by a group of men from neighboring towns and villages who were tired of being taxed and harassed by their more prosperous neighbors. In 1853, the first school opened in Maywood and was taught by Mrs. Emory McNamara using chalk boards and hand-held texters. On October 25, 1860, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, he visited Maywood to deliver a speech at the Academy Hall which had been built to house his father's former estate near Mount Auburn Street and White Road in downtown Chicago. As he left those doors that evening there followed an outpouring of affection for him from all within miles radius as they watched his carriage drive away back down White Road towards Mount Auburn Avenue with its lone horse pulling it - symbolically leaving one era behind while entrance into another began! In 1865, John Pritzker founded International Harvester Co., which would soon become one of America's largest agricultural companies. With large fields across five states (Iowa; Minnesota; Wisconsin; Illinois), Pritzker became known as "the man who made agriculture." One such field that he pioneered was in nearby West Jordan where Pioneer Farms now stands – home to more than 150 acres (60 hectares) cultivated each year! That same year also saw another milestone for Maywood when our church – First Baptist Church – moved into newly constructed facilities adjacent to our schoolhouse on Douglas Road just east of Cicero Avenue! A fire engine drove up next door late one night after residents heard screaming coming from what appeared to be an abandoned building – only to find out it was our new church! Our pastor preached from start to finish without interruption until morning when everyone finally got back inside before services began anew! Maywood was founded in 1837 by Samuel May. The community grew rapidly during the 1840s, and by 1851 it had a population of 2,000. By 1861, the town had reached its peak with a population of 6,000 residents. However, following the American Civil War, Maywood became increasingly struggling and fell into disarray. In 1865, it merged with other nearby towns to form the new city of Chicago. By 1900,Maywood's population had decreased to 1,500 residents and it ceased to exist as a municipality. However, its name lives on as an incorporated community in Cook County located about 20 miles east of downtown Chicago.
Maywood was founded in 1837 by the Maywood community of farmers. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the confluence of the Kankakee and Illinois Rivers. In 1856, Maywood became a village, and in 1916 it was incorporated as a city. The population of Maywood peaked at over 100,000 in 1940, but declined to around 60,000 by 1960.
