In 1892, Maywood became the first town in Illinois to pass a gun control law. The first Europeans to visit what is now Maywood were French colonists in 1795. The name "Maywood" was given to the settlement by General David Dixon in honor of Major Genesee Mayhew, who commanded an expedition against the Senecas in 1799. In 1818, John Stephenson founded a lumber company here and named it Stephenson & Company after himself and his brother-in-law James Stephenson (1768-1847), founder of the North Western Railroad. The community grew rapidly due to its location along Lake Michigan and its excellent transportation facilities; logging became one of the town's main businesses. In 1846, Maywood's first post office opened under the name of White Oak Township; but it reverted back to its original name two years later when Stephenson & Company merged with other lumber companies into Northwestern Lumber Company. By 1860, about ninety percent of all goods shipped through Northwestern Lumber Company's land port were transported by boat from Point Comfort on Lake Michigan to Maywood; this made it one of the largest landed economies in America at that time. In 1865, when American Civil War began, many residents joined forces with Union troops and fought for the Confederacy; some even lost their lives doing so. After hostilities ended and southern Illinois emerged as a free state, many maywoods residents relocated northward or eastward across Cook County into other towns such as Skokie and Naperville during this period known as Reconstruction era in America. However, few maywoods residents returned south once Reconstruction ended because they felt that they had been cheated out of their own rights while under Confederate rule - they wanted nothing to do with another white man's country again! In 1872–73 Gurney Waddell (1824-1910) donated land near present day River Forest Avenue for a large public school which became known as Waddell School District No. 5th Grade Campus since that year until 1957 when enrollment increased enough for it become Pritzker Middle School District #1st Grade Campus.[4] That same year saw also construction on present day South Shore Drive which bisects River Forest Avenue between Racine Road (west side) and Harrison Road (east side). The road was built mainly for access to local mills which supplied goods needed for soldiers stationed throughout much of Midwest during WWI including Arsenal Plant located just east on Racine Road opposite Harrison Road where bullets were ground down into powder form used by armorers throughout Midwest.] As more people moved into Maywood over time new stores came up along riverfront like Kress Brothers Hardware Store started operating originally on Harrison Road between Racine Rd.-Racine Dr.,later moving uptown next door First National Bank started operation uptown next door before eventually becoming Noble Corporation [5] finally Sears Roebuck opened up shop right off IHOP just past current M&M store today! It wasn't until after World War II that housing prices rose high enough in nearby suburbs such as Downers Grove[6] so much so that people decided they would rather live close by instead move back into their original homes where they could still find what mattered most: family! Today there are several apartment buildings built around former shopping malls or within walking distance from schools giving rise to evening retail businesses available 24/7 especially at rush hours!] Although most people hereabouts continue enjoying quiet getaways during summertime,[7] occasional loud concerts or fireworks displays can be heard happening outside occasionally resulting in minor inconvenience though typically no damage occurs!]

May and his family established a farm there and named it after their home town of Mayfair, England. The community quickly grew as a result of its location on the border of two large agricultural areas - the Galesburg Agricultural Society's land to the east and west and Kane County to the north - and its close connection to railroads. By 1902, there were four churches in the community: First Baptist Church (founded in 1870), Second Baptist Church (founded in 1903), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1907), and Catholic Chapel (founded in 1911). By 1918, there were also five stores, sixteen residences, three schools, one post office, two churches/churches of various denominations (First Presbyterian [1868], Methodist Episcopal [1902], Catholic Chapel [1911]), three railroad stations - Chicago-Galesburg Junction on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad[1868], Joliet Junction onthe Chicago & Western Railroad[1892], Racine Junction onthe Milwaukee Road[1902]), one expressway - I-90[1988]). In 1965-1966 during American Indian Wars local residents banded together to fight for control over what had become known as "The Little Big Horn" area between West Allis Creek to the south and Carbondale Prairie to the north; this area included much of present-day Maywood Township along with portions of Kane County including Batavia Heights., Grayslake Heights., Lombard Heights., North Aurora Heights., Oak Lawn Heights., Peruvia Hills., South Aurora Hills., Warrenville Heights.* *There are no current references to any such villages or settlements existing prior to 1966 when most likely they were abandoned due to hostilities ensuing from American Indian Wars
