Maywood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 4,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was named after Maywood Plantation which was founded by James K. Polk in 1835. The community was platted in 1854 and post office started operating on July 1, 1855. The first settler to arrive in Maywood was John Fenton who came from Cumberland Township, Pennsylvania in 1859. Maywood has a history that dates back to when it consisted of only a few homes and farmsteads located near what is now the intersection of Route 36 and Irving Park Road. In 1865, the village became incorporated as Maywood Township with a population of 200 residents. A school opened up in 1870 and by 1880 there were six stores and three churches within the township limits. During World War II, many people from Maywood enlisted into the military and some left their families behind to serve their country during this time period; however, most residents returned home once hostilities ended. One notable resident during this time period who served in the military was Harry S Truman who later became president of United States

The first Europeans to visit Maywood were French traders and missionaries who came in 1671. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1793 when Captain John Smith and his party set out from Fort Dearborn on the Michigan River for what would become British America. They named their new settlement after Mount Vernon in Virginia, which they had seen from their ship anchored offshore. The first post office was established in 1812 and the town became a village in 1836. In 1847, it became a city with a population of over 10,000 people under Mayor Anthony Beale's leadership. Beale served until his death at the age of 80 years on September 25th, 1896. He was one of the longest serving mayors in Cook County history. Maywood experienced rapid growth during World War II as many American factories turned to production for war needs such as airplane parts and armored vehicles. The city's largest employer during that time was Hyatt hotel fame that built its first building here on Wabash Avenue in 1942-1943 construction began on what is now known as Hyatt Place downtown across from City Hall where company headquarters are still located today After World War II ended there were several waves of immigrants coming into Maywood including Poles (1945), Slovaks (1949), Italians (1951), Mexicans (1957), Portuguese (1965) and Asians (1978). Hispanic residents formed their own gangs which led to increased crime rates and social unrest throughout the 1980s through 1990s however this has since subsided significantly with most residents being more than happy to integrate into mainstream society Today Maywood sees steady growth with high school graduates moving into jobs outside of villages like healthcare or finance while young adults continue to move into larger cities such as Chicago making room for other cultures within our community Maywood has been nominated for numerous awards but so far only 2 have been given: an award from The George Washington Awards program honoring excellence by small towns msecodexcom
Maywood was founded in 1837 by John May and his wife, Nancy. The town was named for the maypole that stood in the center of town. The first post office was established in 1839. By 1861, there were over 100 businesses in the town. In 1865, Maywood became a Township and a City on October 1st.
