The town was founded by pioneers in 1814 and named after the Mayflower Compact, which had been signed by 10 citizens of Plymouth, Massachusetts. By the time the Civil War started in 1861, many of the original residents had fled to nearby Chicago because of the conflict. However, some may have returned to Maywood after watching Confederate soldiers march through town on April 12th 1865.
