In 1847, Abraham Lincoln came through Sangamon County and stopped at Maywood while he was touring Illinois'. He had been visioned as president and this visit helped him win the election that year against Andrew Johnson. It wasn’t until after his election that Lincoln started looking for a new home for his family and he decided to move them to Springfield, Missouri where they would live for four years before returning home during the term of Ulysses S Grant as President of America (1869-1877). During World War II, many farmers turned their attention towards cotton production due to moves by Japan into Manchuria which caused an increase in demand for food items like soy sauce and cigarettes across Asia which made Maywood one of the most heavily bombed cities during World War II with over seventy percent of all buildings destroyed or damaged including sixty three percent of schools and ninety nine percent of housing stock loss
