Maywood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located about 25 miles (40 km) north of downtown Chicago. The name "Maywood" comes from the Indian word "mawwida," meaning "forest." The first European to visit Maywood was Abraham Lincoln in 1836. He stopped at the then-new house on Wabash Avenue where he stayed for three days before continuing his journey southward. In 1837, John Quincy Adams came to Maywood as acting President of the United States and spent six weeks here before returning home to New York City. A post office was established at Maywood in 1841, and soon afterward a school was built there by Reverend James Ketchum with support from private individuals and local trustees. In 1865, when Illinois became an U.S. state, Maywood became one of its first townships. The population had grown steadily since its incorporation as a township in 1861; by 1880 it had reached 10,000 residents and grew even more rapidly after that date until it reached 15,000 by 1910. By 1925 less than 1 percent of its population remained rural; most residents were employed within commuting distance by means such as railroads or highways
