In 1915, Jens Christensen opened what would become one of Chicago's first drive-in restaurants - Christensen Drive-in - adjacent to Wirt's bakery parking lot on First Street North near Kedzie Avenue North. It operated under this name until 1888 when it changed its name to "Mattoon" due to objections from some resident merchants who felt that it sounded like a Indian word (matton being an English word meaning 'to beat'). On October 15th 1905 Thorsen Bros., merchant Grocery operation opened at 5 N Second St which remained open until 1912 when it closed because Thorsen ran out of food supplies due mainly to prohibition efforts by America’s new president Woodrow Wilson (). A post office reopened at Mattoon on November 2nd 1912 with name "Mt Vernon" after Mount Vernon Abbey in England which had been chosen as one of several Utopian settlements Wilson visited during his presidency (). After Mail Order pioneer Mrs Aloysius Larkin purchased land north east of town along US 641/IL 90 (now I-294) she founded Aloysius Larkin Land Company Ltd., operating her own mail order department from her home beginning February 1917 thru May 1945 () making her one Of The longest running Women Business Owners In Illinois For Over 65 Years!
