In 1935, the city began purchasing land northeast of downtown from the Gales family. This land would become what is now known as Recreation Park. The park had been in use by students and local citizens since 1915 when it was known as Highland Park. In 1935-36, two new target holders were installed in the park; one at each end of a long track that ran through the park. These targets were made from wood and plastic, but they still allowed residents and tourists to hit them with ease! Target holders continued to be purchased and operated until 1969 when they were replaced by two large inflatable PVC targets located near East High School and West Middle School. Mattoon, Illinois is a small town in Northwest Illinois. It was founded in 1837 by Captain John Mattoon and his wife, Polly. The Mattoons were the first white people to settle in what is now Mattoon. They built a cabin on the edge of the village and started a farm. The first school was built in 1839. In 1847, Captain Mattoon died and his wife moved away to be with her children. she outlived him by only six months. A new family took up residence in Mattoon and continued to grow the community until it reached its present size in 1920. The village of Mattoon has remained largely unchanged since its establishment except for population growth which led to the construction of many new buildings over time including a high school (1921), mosque (2002), library (2006), post office (2007), police station (2009) and firehouse (2015). The early history of Mattoon is peppered with anecdotes about its founders- Captains John Mattoon and Polly- who went from being farmers to becoming key players in developing this isolated area northwest of Chicago. One such story goes like this: After Captains John and Polly married, they set off into the unknown on horseback to found their own town – an event that would have an impact on not only their descendants but also those living near them for years to come. A later account tells of how Captains John’s brother Amos had already settled down some miles east of where they lived when he heard aboutCaptain John’s bold move westward; so he set out himself, driving all night across difficult terrain towards what would become known as “Mattoon Landing” today’s village site on State Route 6 just south of Interstate 55 Bridgehead Rd., some ten miles north-northwest of downtown Chicago’s business district! This event served as both catalyst for others within the area seeking settlement as well as encouragement for CaptainJohn&Polly that their venture could succeed if they brought together everyone who might be interested in joining them – men & women alike young & old, poor & rich… anyone who could find an earnest invitation! And so it began….everyone soon learned how important it was for everyone involved to get along! From then on things just got better – friendships were formed, barnyards were improved (& even worse Tulips became); door-to-door sales were opened up; trading posts were established; teams formed; churches were erected…..the list goes on ad infinitum! Eventually mattonians came TOGETHER not JUST because THEY HAD BEEN INVITED BUT ALSO BECAUSE THEY WERE FEELING THEIR VOICE WAS NOT HEARD OR SHARED BY THE OTHER CITIES NEARBY!!! Consequently much work had been done before any formal organization ever transpired……..all thanks to CAPTAIN JOHN MATTON AND HIS PARTY OF FRIENDS!
