The community was founded by settlers from New England in 1847 and named for Colonel John Matteson, one of the founders of what would become Chicago. The first white settler in Mattoon was Captain George Hall who arrived with his family in 1847. He built a cabin on what is now State Street and later became one of the proprietors of the town site. In 1850, Captain Hall's son Elijah erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street which served as the first courthouse and jail in Mattoon. In 1852, Captains Isaac Hogg and James Puskar established a store at what is now alleyway between First Avenue and State Street which became known as "Hogg's Hole." In 1868, four men - Samuel Gibbs (a farmer), Levi Coffin (a carpenter), Amos Putnam (a cooper) and Job Swenson (a lawyer) - came to Mattoon from Illinois to start a new settlement that would become known as "Mattoon". In 1835–36, he also built an gristmill on what would become Park Boulevard east of present-day Harlem Avenue; this mill continued operation until 1906. In 1837, Worthy married Amelia Ringgold and they moved to their new home which they named "Mt Pleasant". From here they began farming sugar beets and corn around Mount Pleasant until 1850 when they sold their property to James Muhlenberg who established the first cotton gin in Mattoon.
