Mattoon is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,629 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Mattoon was Levi Crandall, who arrived in 1814. The current town of Mattoon was organized in 1837 by John Sutherlin and James Prentice from Crawford Township (now Danville), Illinois. In 1841, it had a population of 527 people. In 1847, the railroad arrived and initial development slowed due to competition from other towns within Cook County for land available for railroad construction. However, with the opening of the Chicago & North Western Railroad in 1853, growth resumed and by 1860 Mattoon had a population of 991 residents. In 1865-66, during the American Civil War, Mattoon joined forces with several surrounding towns (including Danville) to form what would become known as "The Union League" to raise money for war efforts. Despite opposition from some residents who saw war as an opportunity to make money off their town's agricultural products, The Union League successfully raised over $2 million dollars which helped finance military campaigns throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. After the end of World War II there was rapid growth in industry within Mattoon; most notably agriculture because Of this growth many small businesses were born including: Wawa Pizza founder Rick Wawa; Jiffy Lube inventor Lance Johnson; Ford Motor Company product man Bob Perkins; local paper mill owner Floyd Conklin; local radio station KMOX FM). Growth slowed again beginning around 1990 when new technology became popularized such as cellular phone service that caused businesses like Blockbuster Video to move out or close down while others increased rent prices or closed altogether due to lack of customers or competitive pricing by rivals like Netflix etc.).
