Smith. In 1895, the city annexed part of Decatur County and became one of the cities in Cook County. The population of Mattoon increased from about 1,500 in 1870 to over 10,000 by 1920. The downtown area became an important commercial center with several large merchants including J. Pugh & Son Furniture store and Wernick's Pharmacy until it closed down in 1984. By 1930, only a small minority of the population spoke English at home while most residents were either German or Italian immigrants who had come to work on agricultural plantations or mills near Chicago or New York City during this time period. In World War II, many native-born Americans served as soldiers in both Axis (German) and Allied forces fighting against Nazi Germany and Japan respectively; however few remember how life changed for those Germans who found themselves living outside their homes during that war years; they were known as "Kesselherren" (literally " oven men"). Many civilians also volunteered their services within Axis units such as Einsatzgruppen (death squads), which killed Jews, Romani people and others deemed undesirable by Nazi Germany during World War II; however some feel that these groups should not be considered “ civilians” because they took no direct action against combatants under military orders Creech Report 339
