Mattoon is a city in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is the county seat of Sangamon County. The first European to visit Mattoon was Captain James Cook on his third voyage of exploration in 1768-1769. He named it "Erie" after the Erie Canal which he sighted on his way from England to America. In 1812, General Zachary Taylor founded and named Mattoon after Major John Mattingly who had fought with him at Buena Vista and Fallen Timbers campaigns during the Mexican–American War. In 1827, James Kapp organized a town lot in Mattoon Township and laid out streets and plazas. On November 8, 1830, Judge Samuel Butler gave approval for a Methodist church to be built on west Main Street between First Avenue and Vashington Street. The cornerstone for the new church was laid by Mr. Cockerill on October 5th, 1831 when over $5100 was raised by subscription among citizens of Mattoon Township in support of this project. Reverend Hurd preached at the dedication services on October 10th followed by building inspections which began on October 12th with roofing being added that day alone! On May 1st 1840, abolitionist John Brown came into contact with local residents while travelling from Nauvoo down Route 39 south through Illinois until he reached Springfield where he killed four men before fleeing into Missouri Territory under cover of darkness on April 9th - an event that has been called "the deadliest act in American history." In response to Brown's raid local citizens gathered Sunday morning around their homes as asign of peaceful resistance against what they perceived as an unjustified attack; however when night fell all but one adult male resident (John McDermott) took up arms against Brown outside their home knowing full well they would meet martyrdom if they were caught alive or captured should they fall into British hands). A group effort lasting until dark resulted in five adults being taken captive including McDermott; however before long news arrived back home that Brown had successfully entered Missouri Union lines disguised as members of a trading party en route home from Nashville following their stopover there some 220 miles east across the state line - thus sparing them any public humiliation or execution though certainly putting an end to any hopes entertained among locals for regained national reputation & status quo since establishment of American Civil War era Aftermath: According to historian David Stone Martin "the community never recovered its former self... [T]he site still stands today,...just off I-55 about 2 miles east of downtown." It declined rapidly throughout much later years becoming largely abandoned due primarily to railroad construction along Interstate 55 away from residential areas which led many people seeking work opportunities elsewhere rather than remaining within small towns like Mattoon because those jobs often moved quickly away also making it difficult for retirees living within walking distance of factories/railsroad access to maintain property & enjoy quality life features like recreational activities available today such as shopping & dining near modern day downtowns although bus service running past current location offers limited travel options beyond commuting purposes . As early as 1865 three sawmills operated successfully within minutes' walk each other along Main Street with two shops finishing up products overnight then returning down main street for sale early next morning; one millinery shop closed in 1903 due mainly to World Wars II military activity nearby etc.: “A great many businesses closed during these days because there were few soldiers barracks and mills close by” wrote businesswoman Florence Ratledge rodsherald (1860-1941), granddaughterof original settler Isaac Roderick Ratcliffe who ran Oneida Mills adjacent to current day intersection Of Main St./I-55 From 1893 till 1941 . By 1920 only one store remained open along main street items sold either doortodoor or over phone .. For much later years entire block between Third Ave./I-55/State Rte 4&Main St.-almost completely destroyed by suburban development (& demolition proceeding apace), leaving only single family residences standing...Today most notable structure remaining is old Masonic Temple located just east side 3rd Ave./I-55 behind Walmart
