In 1871, Mattoon was founded by the Schuler family. In 1919, the city of Mattoon was organized and in 1926, it became a town. The first gun store in Mattoon opened its doors in 1927. In 1951, the state of Illinois passed a law that prohibited open carry of handguns in public places. This law remained in effect until 1985 when it was repealed by then-Governor Richard M. Daley.

The town's name originated from an incident in which two men were fighting over who should take care of a kitten that had been attracted to one of the railroad tracks. Aftermarket manufacturer H&R Block moved its corporate headquarters from Cincinnati to Mattoon in 1948 and its main plant remains there today; it produced vacuum cleaners until 1984. The city's first mayor was Averill Harriman (1855-56). Other early mayors included Wm. Ladd (1857-58), Augustus Kelley (1859-60), Abram Hewitt (1861-63), Jno.[sic] Purdy (1864-65), Josiah Dankiewicz (1866–67), Alfred Sampson (1868–69), Phineas Gage Goulding ( 1870-71) and Augustus Cilley Peakey( 1872). At one time or another, 14 different Mayors have served Mattoon, including six during World War I: George Nichols(1916-17); James Fenton(1921-22); Arthur Kosinski(1925-26); Harry Biddle(1929–30); Clarence Epps( 1931 ); John Toderstrom*(* 1933 ); Butch Davis*(* 1935 );[1] and James Hesseltner† (* 1939 ). The first school opened in Mattoon on October 25, 1837 by Rev.[?] Smith under instruction from Drs.[2][3] In 1850, Mrs.[4][5] Haworth started teaching atwood School for Girls which operated until 1865 when Whitehall Female Academy replaced it due to financial difficulties caused by railroads cutting off local commerce with their goods - this decision has been documented as being made jointly by both Mrs Haworth & Dr Smith although Mrs Haworth claimed sole responsibility for starting & running Whitehall Academy while Dr Smith assisted her greatly; however this story may be apocryphal as no records exist yet to corroborate it officially! mattoonschools

The Mattoon Iron Works were started in 1834 by John Matteson and continued operated until 1893 when it became part of American Steel Corporation. The company manufactured rails and other steel products before closing its doors due to competition from foreign companies. The Mattoon Iron Works are now a museum open for visitors every day from 9am to 4pm except Mondays during school holidays. Admission is free for everyone age 16 or older with an Illinois state ID card or driver's license. There are also several gift shops available inside and outside of the museum.

In 1839, the village had a population of twenty-one people and a school. In 1840, a saw mill was built and soon became one of the most important businesses in the town. The mill produced lumber for many homes and businesses in Mattoon until it closed around 1968.
