Mattoon, Illinois is a small town in the north-central part of Illinois. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mattoon is located in McHenry County. The town began as a log settlement in 1839 on the east bank of the Kishwaukee River, about three miles upstream from what is now Mattoon. The first settler was Daniel Boone, who named it after his family's home place in Kentucky. In 1841, James Kapp founded a gristmill here that became one of the early flour mills in Illinois. In 1863, John Atherton built a dam and mill complex on the Kishwaukee River and made Mattoon an important commercial center for eastern Iowa and northern Michigan. In 1875, General George Armstrong Custer led an army through McHenry County during the American Civil War and fought at Battle Creek Bridge against forces under General Ulysses S. Grant near Mattoon; Custer's memory was invoked by local residents when he was honored with a monument to be erected on Main Street in 1905. In 1916–1917, World War I affected Mattoon profoundly: More than half of all buildings were destroyed or damaged by fire when artillery rounds exploded prematurely inside several storehouses used by ammunition manufacturers; more than 2 dozen people died as a result of this tragedy alone. The post-World War II boom brought new prosperity to Mattoon; many businesses were opened up after production shifted out of Chicago because there were no tariffs on goods coming into America from Europe anymore (the national average had been lowered following World War II). However, some problems persisted such as high levels of crime (which has since declined) and declining property values due to commuting costs becoming increasingly costlier outside Mattoon's boundaries while housing values remained relatively stable within its borders overall... Today much of what once made life difficult for locals has long gone away - there are few services provided by government agencies or private industry - but there are still plenty of opportunities for people to get involved locally in everything from setting up their own businesses to contributing to community events... With such tight quarters indoors most residents tend not to venture outside much these days either; however you can find some music concerts being organized every couple months or so thanks to Facebook groups etcetera

Mattoon is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name comes from Mattoon Township, which was organized in 1831. The first settler in Mattoon was Levi Coffin, who arrived in 1832. He named his community after his maternal grandfather, Moses Mattoon. In 1834, John Hickey bought land adjacent to what is now Mattoon and established what would become Hickey's Mills Company with powerful partners including James Shields and Ebenezer Howard. The company manufactured woolen fabrics and other items until it merged with JH&E Manufacturing Company in 1907 to become JH&E-Mattoon Corporation. The first post office in Mattoons opened on December 24th, 1834 (the date of the original plat). It was located on property that later became the town square. A sawmill and gristmill were built there soon after by John Hickey and others associated with the early settlement of Mattoon. In 1865, during the American Civil War, three men from nearby Galesburg were captured as Confederate spies by Union troops near Matteon Creek Bridge over which they crossed to plant guerrilla crops beneath Union lines undetected; their capture prompted General Ulysses S Grant to order a general search for them among all Union forces throughout southern Illinois following their surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 11th 1865 under an agreement between General Robert E Lee and Abraham Lincoln that these men should be exchanged if freed before their due process had expired (they were instead executed). After the war ended, most of Galesburg's male citizens left for new opportunities in America or abroad while many women stayed behind to help rebuild what had been lost during the conflict; some of these women married local veterans or started families of their own while others continued working at Hickey's mills until its closure in 1922; however few remnants remain today of this once prosperous community - one such remnant is an extant brick building located within walking distance of the current town square from which settlers took their names back into service when they founded new communities around these original mills sites beginning about 1830-1840s onward including part west of present day Galesburg along State Street also known as "Old Dutchtown"
Mattoon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2000 census. The community was founded by General George Mattoon in 1837 and named for him. It became a town in 1859 and an incorporated village in 1915. Mattoon was the site of several important battles during the American Civil War including the Battle of Mattoon Station on May 10, 1862, which resulted in the death of Confederate general Robert E. Lee and over 1,000 Union casualties. The city also hosted the 20th annual World's Fair from 1903 to 1907.
