The Mattoon Massacre took place on December 14, 1872, when six men were shot and killed by local farmer John Ringwald in what is now the town of Mattoon, Illinois. It was the first mass shooting in the United States. The tragedy has been blamed on a mix of factors, including racism and poor gun safety practices at the time.

Despite these efforts, there is still a large demand for new firearm safety technologies both before and after shootings occur – something that policymakers should continue focus on if they want to reduce firearm deaths and injuries across America

In 1847, Mattoon was founded by John A. Matteson and his family on a farm named Enterprise near what is now North Kimball Road and West Adams Boulevard. The first store in Mattoon was opened by Cuthbert Hurd in 1868. According to the 2010 census, Mattoon has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. It straddles the border of both Macomb County and Cook County. The community sits on the eastern edge of Rolling Meadows Township, inside Rolling Meadows Park which includes rolling hills that make for an attractive setting for homes, businesses, schools and other public uses like hospitals or shopping malls. Additionally it has access to Lake Michigan through its borders with Macomb County as well as Chicago's Waterford Road Via US-9W which runs through it making it easy to get around without having to go out into town or drive down narrow country roads

Today, Mattoon is known for its unique History Museum which features exhibits on local culture and history.
Mattoon was founded in 1847 by refugees from the Great Lakes region. The town was named for General James Mattoon, a hero of the American Revolution. In 1852, Mattoon became the county seat of Cook County.
