Mattoon is a small town in Illinois. It has been known for its manufacturing and agriculture industries, but more recently it has become a center for music and arts. The population of Mattoon was 1,024 as of the 2010 census. The community is located in McLean County, Illinois. Mattoon is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first settlers in Mattoon were farmers who arrived from southern Indiana in 1837. They raised corn, beans, and other crops until 1881 when an oil well was discovered on the property and production began to increase. The oil company founded by John Dickey developed tourism around the wellhead which attracted people from all over the United States to visit the town during summertime. By 1919, Mattoon had a telephone system and began to grow rapidly with development of businesses such as a grocery store, library, post office, hotel/motel, car dealership/repair shop and many others which remain today including two churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1865) and Christ Lutheran Church (founded 1870). In 1925-1926 local Malecho Negro American Indian contestant Red Cloud played at Ford Field in Chicago for Team America against International Roosevelt Giants baseball team led by Dutch Schultz before returning home to play another game that night at Joe Louis Arena against White Sox on October 15th 1926 with his tribe's traditional clothing complete with headdress consisting of conical Cochise beaded earrings beads necklace shell bracelets bows arrows guns hand tools spears nets fishing spears saddles horses wagons cars buses taxis etc... One night he played three innings without getting beat only changing positions once then retiring as best player ever... As usual this great event set off much excitement throughout Chicagoland what did not include Local newspapers articles stating "Mr Colorful Green Man Loses Eye In Game" Red Cloud being blind since birth huh? Mattoon continues to be commercial hub for surrounding communities due mostly to numerous factories that have been established here like A&P Stores (now Kroger), Humble Oil (now ExxonMobil), McCormick & Co., Weisman Paper Mills etc along with numerous restaurants having sprung up like Zim’s Pizza Place (closed now), Andy’s Sports Grill (closed now), Tim Hortons Coffee Shop(closed now) Dairy Queen(closed now) KFC(closed now)... Numerous festivals are held annually such as Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony featuring thousands of ornaments lights Built onto 130' long tree started outside during evening hours on December 6th each year followed by live nativity show inside church auditorium lasting several hours... New Year's Eve Celebrations features several concerts throughout downtown including top 40 artist headlined by Michael Jackson late evening followed by fireworks display over river

Mattoon, Illinois was a small town in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,026 at the 2010 census. The Mattoon post office operated from 1871 to 1921. The first settler in Mattoon was Jacob Kieffer, who arrived in 1837. In 1841, Captain Lewis Fenton established a store and postoffice here. A store and blacksmith shop were built by George Hays on the east side of Main Street in1851; this structure still stands today. In 1857, John Sibley settled here and organized the village of Mattoon into one precinct with a total population of twenty-three. He also built a school house which still stands today on Federal Road (now US 40). The first church service in Mattoon was held on January 9th, 1860, under the direction of Revs Wm J Watson and Ebenezer Cookman. At that time there were only three settlers living in the village: Mr Sibley himself (edictary), Mrs Holmes (wife), and six children between them ages 7 through 16 years old – including two daughters born while their father was serving as an army doctor during the Civil War. In 1865 Rev J Bledsoe organized another congregation for the benefit of all religious denominations within five miles of Mattoon; that congregation met at his home until 1870 when they erected their own building on State Route 20 near present day Parkersburg Landing Shopping Center. The current church building dates back to 1907! Reverend Bledsoe also served as pastor from 1889 until his death in 1922 – he is buried at Elmwood Cemetery there alongside his wife Olivette Bledsoe (1847-1927). In 1898 Rev C Pilette organized another congregation for services affiliated with Rome Baptist Church located two blocks west of Highway 508 south of downtown; that congregation meeting place has been used since then as an elementary school gymnasium/library combo facility! Reverend Pilette is buried there alongside his wife Clara Pilette (1868-1963) along with six children born to them between 1892 and 1918: Alonzo O’Leary (1907-1984), Lena Mae “Lena” Pilette (1910-1994), Artemas “Artie” O’Leary II (1920-1996), Carolyn Jane “Carolyn” O’Leary(1924-) & Thomas Edward Pilette Jr.(1928-) . One other early settler well remembered locally is Nathan Griggs who arrived about 1840 accompanied by his parents Peter Griggs & Mary Ann Smith MaguireGriggs settled on section 3 eastown lot 4 north which became known as Griggsville after him
The Mattoon Massacre occurred on November 3, 1871, when a group of white men and boys, led by Sheriff John Fenton, killed six black children and one adult at the Mattoon Schoolhouse in Illinois. The massacre has been cited as one of the worst instances of racism in America.
