Mattoon, Illinois is a small town in the midwest of the United States. It was founded in 1836 by John Mattoon and his wife Margaret. The town has a population of about 3,000 people. John Mattoon was born in 1784 in what is now Westchester County, New York. He became a farmer and moved to Mattoon in 1836 with his wife, Margaret. They first lived on a farm north of the town. After they had two children, they built a house on First Street that still stands today. John Mattoon died in 1872 and Margaret continued to live there until her death in 1951. She is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery. The economy of Mattoon is based primarily on agriculture and manufacturing. Agriculture includes strawberries, cornmeal, eggs, butter, cheese, flour, salt pork, cottonseed oil and other items such as hay and oats. Manufacturing includes several businesses that produce various items such as tractors and tools; printing presses; automobiles; brick houses; furniture; bicycles; mining equipment; seed products such as corn and beans; lumber

Mattoon was a small town in Illinois, United States. It is located in the state's central district and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is named after Major General John Mattoon, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Illinois. The first settler in Mattoon was Augustus Kelley, who arrived in 1814. He built a log cabin on a stream that ran through the town. In 1836, George Wetherall founded another settlement nearby, Spring Grove. Wetherall operated an agricultural farm with his family until he died in 1859. His son William took over the farm and continued to run it until his death in 1903. In 1882, Edward Payson purchased land near Mattoon from James Ketchum for $3 per acre (approximately US$40 per square kilometer). Payson began to develop the land into farms that would provide food for local people and animals. He named his farm Crystal City after one of his daughters (Crystal City Today is a shopping mall located adjacent to Payson's original estate). The first post office at Mattoon opened on November 1, 1887. It was called "Mattoon Post Office". The name changed to "Mattoons" on February 14, 1888 when it became part of Rock Island County under the jurisdiction of Chicago Heights Township (now Johnson Park). On October 2, 1899, Rock Island County merged with Cook County to form Illinois General Assembly District 3 which included most of what is now Mattoon except for a small portion north of Interstate 95 which remained within Cook County boundaries until 1998 when it became part of Danville Township.] In 1907–08 there were three school districts: North Side School District #1 which came about due to consolidation between North Side School Districts 2 and 3; South Side School District #2 formed following split off from West Side School District #1; and East Side School District #3 which followed split off from North Side SchoolDistrict #2 because all schools serving east side students were moved west into Danville Township after purchase by Jens Hesselman] In 1916 Rock Island Transit Company started service between Mattoon-Crystal City but only lasted two years] In 1929 Joe McCarthy campaigned here against President Franklin D Roosevelt ] On November 7th 1938 during World War II USS Hanson bombed Japanese shipping ship suspected allied submarines anchored offshore nearwingthe mouthof Lake Michigan killing forty nine Japanese sailors including five officers ].On board Hanson were Enlisted men navy petty officer Third Class Abe Matsuda ] After war ended Japan sued United States for damages ] US won case
Mattoon was founded in 1836 by John Mattoon and his brother-in-law, David Fink. The Mattoons were a family of farmers who lived on a farm that sits on the site of what is now Mattoon. In 1868, the Mattoons moved to a farm east of town and started raising cows. They also raised chickens, pigs, and horses. In 1922, the family sold their farm to J.P. Biddle and his wife Sarah. Biddle ran the farm until he died in 1957. After Biddle's death, the property passed through several hands before it was purchased by Marge Ritchie in 1978. She kept it as her own until 2003 when she donated it to the Illinois State Historical Society for use as a museum
