Mattoon, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,906 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the state of Illinois. It is the county seat of DuPage County. The first permanent settler in Mattoon was George Sibley in 1836. A post office called Mattoon was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. In 1839, three men named Ewing founded a gristmill on the east side of the river near present-day Midway Road and Orchard Drive. The mill became known as Ewing's Mill after them. In 1861, John Purdy brought over 300 acres (120 hectares) of land to what is now Mattoon from Aurora Township for $1 per acre ($0.50 per hectare). He built a rough log cabin which he named "Purdy's cabin." This settlement grew rapidly with new settlers arriving throughout 1861 and 1862. By 1863, there were fourteen buildings in town including two churches and one schoolhouse. The first railroad crossing into Mattoon occurred at Canadian Avenue on December 15, 1868 when the Chicago & Northwestern Railway crossed from Aurora to Crystal Lake via what is now Elmwood Avenue; this line later became part of Union Pacific Railroad company history as well as being an important route for mail service between Chicago and St Joseph,. On October 1st 1869 Mrs Fannie Weisenthal donated 6000 board feet (500 meters) of lumber from her farm located northeast corner of Halsted Street & Hennepin Street to help build a Methodist church that would serve residents in that area as well as those living around Crystal Lake by providing worship space on Sundays while also exporting lumber to other parts of the country.. . On February 14th 1870 Mr O'Brien received a deed from James Shields therein described: "One hundred seventy five acres (30 hectares), lying Lots 3 & 4 upon which My late Friend James Shields has lately erected his house situate about six miles south westward along State highway 12N joining Highway 16 at Richwoods creek aforesaid." This parcel includes current day corner lot number 7 on South Main Street opposite Richwoods Creek park
