He built a cabin on the east side of the river near what is now Lake Michigan Boulevard and Congress Street. In 1840, Captain John Matteson sold his interest in the town to Samuel Colt for $5 per acre ($2 per hectare). Colt began developing the land into a manufacturing center for firearms and ammunition production. In 1846, General George Sanger arrived at what is now Mattoon with an army seeking refuge from warring factions in Missouri. He set up camp at what is now Park Avenue and First Street while he investigated possible sites for a new capital city in Illinois. General Sanger selected what is now downtown Mattoon as the site for his new capital city because it was centrally located between both St. Louis and Chicago and had potential to become a major agricultural center due to its location next to two large rivers. The name given to this new capital city by General Sanger was "Mattoon". During World War II, much of downtown Mattoon were destroyed bybombing raids conducted by the United States Air Force during the 1945 bombing campaign against Japan
