By 1903, all rifles had been fitted with breech-loaders which allowed the user to fire multiple rounds at once without having to reload. This gave rise to the term “bullet hell” because it was now possible to shoot someone with just one round from a distance and kill them. In 1915, an improved bullet was developed which could pass through flesh without exploding. This new bullet was known as the “Tall Boy” bullet and it quickly became a favorite among shooters because it was much easier and faster to hit targets than older bullets. In 1935, firearms manufacturer Colt introduced what is considered the first semi-automatic rifle, the Model 1911A1. By 1888, there were over 100 businesses operating in Mattoon with an average size of $10,000 per year. This growth led to the founding of the current mayoralty and city council form 1898. Today, Mattoon remains one of the most vibrant small towns within reach of Chicagoans and visitors alike due to its preserved architecture and cultural significance as well as its easy access to conveniences such as highway I-75 (the "Illinois Turnpike") and Chicago's famous Loop metropolitan area. Mattoon, Illinois is located in the United States of America. It is a village in Sangamon County, Illinois. The population was 2,567 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is one of 25 villages in Sangamon County. The Village of Mattoon was organized on December 14, 1881 by order of the General Assembly and approved by the voters on November 3, 1882. The first settler in Mattoon was Nicholas Krieger who arrived there with his family on October 15, 1847. He and his wife Margaret (née Weigel) built a log cabin near what is now the village square. In 1850, John Hargrave came to Mattoon from Ray county and erected a dam across the Little Ottawa River to power an sawmill he built southeast of town. In 1851-1853 three other German immigrants: Johann Friedrich Koenig (born c1798), Adam Gottlieb Pohl (born c1801) and Wilhelm Ernst Kappel( born c1802) also settled in Mattoon; all four were killed when their wagon carrying goods went off a road into a ravine near present day Johnstown about two miles west of town on March 1st.–4th., 1854 while traveling from Peoria to Jacksonville for trade purposes only
In 1815, the first permanent settler in Mattoon, Illinois was John P. Gentry. By 1830, there were over a dozen families living in Mattoon. The town started out as a small community of about twenty-five people and quickly grew to around ninety-five by 1840. In 1859, the first school was built in Mattoon and remained in use until 1955. The town also developed an agricultural economy based on raising livestock and farming produce.
