Mattoon is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the county seat of Cook County. Mattoon was founded in 1836 by English settlers. The first village in Mattoon was called 'Mattoonki'. In 1837, a group of Irish immigrants settled near Mattoon and named their new village after themselves - 'Mattoon'. In 1838-39, another group of English settlers arrived and named their settlement 'Foster', after one of their families who had died during the voyage from London. The name Foster stayed with the community until it was discontinued in 1880 when all but two buildings were destroyed by fire. In 1840-41, a Baptist church was built on what is now Main Street in Mattoon. The first pastor for that church was Revd John Aikenberry. Reverend Aikenberry preached there until his death in 1865; thereafter Dr James Burt officiated at various times until 1870 when he became pastor emeritus and remained so until his death in 1893. On July 6, 1842, five men - three farmers and two blacksmiths - set out from Mattoons to explore the prairies beyond central Illinois on what would be known as the Prairie Road Expeditionary Force #2 (PROF2). They reached Burlington Heights about 100 miles east of Chicago on October 9 and made initial contact with American Indian leaders such as Sitting Bull before reaching Fort Dearborn on October 15th where they reported back to General Winfield Scott about their findings. That same day President James Kossuth addressed a crowd gathered at Fort Dearborn to celebrate PROF2's success; among those present were future Ulysses S Grant and Ulysses S Grant's fatherStephen Douglas! Most importantly however, PROF2 members brought news back home to England which helped spur plans for an official expedition led by Major George Armstrong Custer which finally departed for America on November 3rd – just weeks after King Polk had been deposed! Unfortunately not all members returned alive: Five soldiers (including 2 officers) lost their lives while exploring northwest Minnesota Territory during this aborted campaign known as "The Great Sioux War". On December 12th 1861 – just over two years after PROF2 left behind – reports began coming back from troops stationed along Missouri River that Indians had begun raiding settlements along its banks; within days General David Dixon ordered Colonel John Strother’s 4th Infantry Regiment (the ‘Strother Division’) to march upriver towards these reports only to find that upon arrival they discovered nothing amiss! This fiasco came to be known as The Battle Of Washita Creek! On January 9th 1862 Captain Samuel Fenton took command of Company D/4ths Indiana Volunteers units assigned under Major Robert Ewing across from Stroudsburg Landing region nearpresent day Mount Carmel Cemetery due southwest of Mattoon; during this engagement Fenton’s unit killed or captured 5 INDIAN WARRIORS including Chief Tecumseh! At its peak strength numbering approximately 350 men including mounted cavalry troopers under Captain Fenton’s command – THE STROKER DIVISION held an approximately six mile frontage against estimated Indian numbers between Ft Monmouth Junction(just north of present day Mount Carmel Cemetery)and Ft Pulaski(just downstream from Mt Carmel Cemetery), successfully repelling repeated attacks by well-led & disciplinedIndians throughoutlateOctober1861-January1862………………………………………..
