Growth continued until 2000 when most of Matteson's industrial buildings were destroyed by fire. Matteson's first post office was established in 1836. The town had a population of about 1,000 people by 1860. In 1871, Matteson voters passed a referendum approving annexation by the city of Chicago; Matteson residents voted to remain annexed into Chicago. In 1895, Matteson voters passed another referendum legalizing liquor sales and making it an open town for all citizens over 21 years old. The mayor at that time was Edwin Woosley and the Democtrict Marshal was John Fenton. The Panic of 1893 caused many factories and businesses to close throughout Cook County and much of northern Illinois due to low demand for goods exported from those areas during that time period
