Matteson, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Matteson has been a part of the Chicago metropolitan area since its founding in 1847. The first settler in Matteson Township was Samuel H. Davenport and his family who arrived on April 12, 1847, according to the 1860 census. The community name "Matteson" is derived from the Ojibwe language meaning "to build." The first post office called Matteson "Mendota". It opened on December 15, 1865 and closed on July 14, 1870 due to low mailing rates. In 1892 Jens Jensen purchased land east of Matteson for what would become Stonington Park. He built a country home there which he named Ellington after his father-in-law's ranch in Minnesota where he had been born and raised. In 1906–07 John Ahern bought 24 acres adjoining Ellington and renamed it North Side Drive (now Eisenhower Road). That same year he also built a two-story frame schoolhouse which still stands today across from the park headquarters building ( presently known as the Stroger Museum ). Mr. Ahern served as Matteson's first postmaster until his death in 1935; during that time period mail service was conducted by horse and buggy through much of northwestern Cook County . Aiken’s grocery store burned down on October 5th 1909 killing him and eleven other employees including four cashiers at Wrigleyville’s Merchants National Bank . Insurance companies paid out $1 million dollars to those affected by that tragedy but no one ever found fault with Aiken or with any of their supplier – Sears Roebuck & Co., who were not even insured up until that point! No arrests were made because insurance companies then knew exactly what had happened ..... In 1911 Aiken moved his business to an old train depot near downtown Chicago ( now State Street) buying all of what is now known as Old Depot Square - now one of Chicagoland's most popular shopping areas! After thirty years successfully running this busy grocery store Aiken retired at age eighty-six purely from choice rather than having to answer questions about why his company wasn't covered under insurance when it should have been – like so many other businesses before and after!
In 1892, Matteson had a population of 2,500. The first stores in the town were run by John W. Tapp and George C. Matteson. In 1893, the first school was built in Matteson and it was called the East Matteson School. In 1904, the first hospital was built in Matteson and it was called the Western Hospital. In 1916, the first radio station in Matteson was started and it was called WDIC-TV. The First Lady of Illinois, Abraham Lincoln, visited Matteson on October 8th, 1916 to speak at a public meeting about juvenile delinquency prevention programs. During World War I,Matteson served as an airfield for military flights from Chicago’s Midway Airport. After the war ended,Matteson became a manufacturing center with production of autos beginning in 1926 and radios beginning in 1931
